Focus Area

Socio-political and economic challenges exacerbated by recurring conflicts in Plateau State

Funded By

CAFOD

Project Location

Jos Plateau State

Project which is funded by CAFOD aims to address the socio-political and economic challenges exacerbated by recurring conflicts in Plateau State, Nigeria. The state has been scarred by violent conflicts, including the 2001 ethno-religious crisis in Jos, and recent clashes in Bassa and Jos North Local Government Areas.

These conflicts have resulted in significant loss of lives, displacement, and psychosocial trauma, creating an environment of fear and mistrust. Traditional conflict resolution mechanisms have proven inadequate, and the social fabric of these communities has been torn apart. The project seeks to reinforce successes achieved in previous initiatives by promoting sustainable peace and social harmony.

The project aims to achieve this by equipping community members with dialogue skills, fostering cohesion through various activities, and strengthening conflict resolution mechanisms. By addressing the root causes of conflicts and building the resilience of communities, the project aims to bring about positive change. This will be achieved through enhancing dialogue skills, fostering social cohesion, and strengthening conflict resolution mechanisms.

The project recognizes the importance of addressing Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) dynamics and ensuring the inclusion of all groups of community members. Efforts will be made to ensure equal participation, gender-sensitive approaches, and empowerment of men, women, boys, and girls. By ensuring meaningful participation and empowerment, the project aims to create a more inclusive and resilient society.

End Date

Focus Area

Youths from various religious, political, and ethnic groups to learn about dialogue, reconciliation, and peacebuilding

Funded By

Aid to the Church in Need

Project Location

Plateau State

The project which is funded by Aid to the Church in Need aims to bring together youths from various religious, political, and ethnic groups to learn about dialogue, reconciliation, and peacebuilding. This initiative is part of the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos’s pastoral plan to address the destruction of lives and property, polarization of settlements, and revenge mentality among youths in Jos.

A baseline study revealed that despite the absence of violent confrontations, frequent attacks have left communities traumatized. The polarization of settlements has created a gap and increased mutual suspicion among groups. People are in dire need of a safe space to meet, develop, and mend broken relationships.

The project seeks to address perceptions fueling the crises, such as biases against certain groups and deliberate exclusions. Constant dialogue and efforts towards reconciliation are necessary to alleviate these concerns.

The project’s objectives include reducing the risk of violence and recruitment by insurgent groups, strengthening incentives for individuals to contribute constructively to their communities, and promoting peaceful methods for addressing grievances.

The project’s theory of change is that by supporting communities in Plateau, Nigeria, to become more socially inclusive and increasing their capacity to mitigate conflict, they can reduce the push and pull factors leading individuals to depend on violence and join insurgent groups.

The project will focus on themes such as conflict transformation, interfaith dialogue, entrepreneurship, leadership skills, trauma healing, and sports and arts for peace. The training will be structured to accommodate different education levels, using adult learning methods, teaching aids, and role-plays.
